Blarney Roses

[D]Can anybody tell me where the Blarney Roses grow?
It may be down in Limerick town or[G] over in Mayo.
It's some[D]where in the Em'rald Isle, but[G] this I want to know:
Can [D]anybody tell me where the[G] Blarney Roses [D]grow

'Twas over in ould Ireland near the town of Cushendall,
One morn I met a damsel there, the fairest of them all.
'Twas with my young affections and my money did she go,
And she told me she belonged to where the Blarney Roses grow

Her cheeks were like the roses, her hair a raven hue.
Before that she was done with me, she had me raving too.
She left me sorely stranded, not a coin she left, you know,
And she told me she belonged to where the Blarney Roses grow

They've roses in Killarney, and the same in County Clare,
But 'pon my word those roses, boys, I can't see anywhere.
She blarney'd me and, by the powers, she left me broke -- ho, ho! --
Did this damsel that belonged to where the Blarney Roses grow.

Acushla gra-machree, me boys, she murmured soft, did she,
"If you belong to Ireland, it's yourself belongs to me."
Her Donegal come-all-ye brogue, it captured me, you know.
Bad scram to her and that same place, where the Blarney Roses grow

Here's the guitar chords in the key of G

[G]Can anybody tell me where the Blarney Roses grow?
It may be down in Limerick town or[C] over in Mayo.
It's some[G]where in the Em'rald Isle, but[C] this I want to know:
Can [G]anybody tell me where the[C] Blarney Roses [G]grow

2. Deel twee Blues op de trekzak.

I'll tell me ma

Hier het nummer I'll tell my ma.

Transatlantic Wadden Session

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams.

Last Saturday night I got married
Me and my wife settled down
Me and my wife have parted
Gonna take another stroll downtown.

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams.

Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I take a big notion
To jump in the river and drown.

Irene goodnight
Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams.

Stop rambling, stop gambling
Stop staying out late at night
Go home to your wife and family
And stay by the fire side bright.

Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams.

John Prine - My Old Kentucky Home

Jo Stafford 'Red River Valley' Original 1949 version 78 rpm

Red River Valley
From this valley they say you are going,
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile,
For they say you are taking the sunshine
Which has brightened our pathways a while.

Chorus

Come and sit by my side if you love me;
Do not hasten to bid me adieu,
But remember the Red River Valley,
And the girl that has loved you so true.

I've been thinking a long time, my darling,
Of the sweet words you never would say,
Now, alas, must my fond hopes all vanish?
For they say you are going away.

Won't you think of the valley you're leaving,
Oh, how lonely and sad it will be,
Just think of the fond heart you're breaking,
And the grief you are causing to me.

From this valley they say you are going,
When you go, may your darling go too?
Would you leave her behind unprotected,
When she loves no one other than you.

As you go to your home by the ocean,
May you never forget those sweet hours,
That we spent in the Red River Valley,
And the love we exchanged 'mid the flowers.

I have promised you, darling, that never
Will a word from my lips cause you pain,
And my life, it will be yours forever,
If you only will love me again.

They will bury me where you have wandered,
Near the hills where the daffodils grow,
When you're gone from the Red River valley,

For I can't live without you I know.

The Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys - Worried Man Blues

Worried Man Blues

Words by Woody Guthrie
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song,
It takes a worried man tossing a worried song,
I'm worried now but I won't be worried long!

Went across the river, I lay down to sleep;
Went across the river, I lay down to sleep,
When I woke up.had shackles on my feet!

Twenty one links of chain around my leg;
Twenty one links of chain around my leg;
And on each link.there's an initial of my name!

The train ride is twenty one coaches long;
Train I ride is twenty one coaches long;
And the gal I love . is on that train and gone!

Asked that judge what's gonna be fine;
Asked that judge what's gonna be fine;
Twenty one years on that rooky mountain line!

Twenty one years to pay my awful Crime!
Twenty one years to pay my awful crime!
Twenty one years! And I still got ninety Nine!

Parlez-Nous à Boire

Track: Parlez-Nous à Boire
Artist: The Balfa Brothers
Album: The Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music: Vols. 1 & 2
Label: Swallow Records

This is a studio version of the wonderful track featured in the movie Southern Comfort. Unfortunately, as best I know, the complete movie soundtrack was never released, so if you want to hear it in all its glory you'll have to buy the DVD. It's a good movie and the soundtrack, produced by Ry Cooder, is excellent.

Here's Dewey Balfa describing his 1964 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, the first time Cajun music had featured there -

"I had played in house dances, family gatherings, maybe a dance hall where you might have seen as many as two hundred people at once. In fact, I doubt I had ever seen two hundred people at once. And in Newport, there were seventeen thousand. Seventeen thousand people who wouldn't let us get off stage."

Parlez Nous a Boire
Words & music traditional

O, parlez - nous a boire,
Non pas de mariage,
Toujours en regretons,
Les jolis jours passes.
S'it a ti maris, avec une jolie fille,
Te tands de grand danger, mon cher,
lls vont a la voler.
O, parlez - nous a boire...
S'it a ti maris, avec une vilaine fille,
Te tands de grand danger, faudra,
Que tu fais ta vie avec.
S'it a ti maris, avec une fille bien fauvre,
Te tands de grand danger, faudra,
Travailler tout ta vie.

O, parlez - nous a boire...
S'it a ti maris, avec une fille qui a de quoi,
Te tands de grand danger, faudra,
Attraper des grandes rapproches.
Parlez - moi, mon grand bon - a - rien,
Tu ta gaspiller mon bien!
Parlez - moi, mon grand bon - a - rien,

She moved thro' the fair

This is a tragic piece about lost love. This song was written in 1909 although the original pre-dates this. But a song collector and publisher named Herbert Hughes heard the melody while in County Donegal and approached the song writer Padric Colum with the last two lines of the song and asked him to write a version.

Sinéad left out some of the song.
Usually the third verse is
"The people were saying no two were e´er wed,
But one has a sorrow that never was said,
And I smiled as she passed with her goods and her gear,
And that was the last that I saw of my dear."
and the last verse should start:
"last night she came to me, my dead love came in"
This is where the young man denies that he murdered his young love.

In the last verse we hear the line, I dreamed last night my young love came in. The original line is, I dreamed last night that my dead love came in (implying she haunts him for what he done).

The song has been used in several movies including Brave Heart.

Adieu sweet lovely Nancy

Adieu sweet lovely Nancy

Adieu sweet lovely Nancy

Adieu, sweet lovely Nancy, ten thousand times adieu
I'm a-going round the ocean, love, to seek for something new
Come change your ring with me, dear girl, come change your ring with me,
For it might be a token of true love while I am on the sea.

When I am far upon the sea, who knows not where I am
Kind letters I will write to you from every foreign land
The secrets of your heart, dear girl, are the best of my good will
So let my body be where it might, my heart is with you still.

There's a heavy storm arising, see how it comes around
While we poor sailors are on the sea, a-fighting for the crown
Our officer commanded us, and him we must obey
Expecting every moment all to get cast away.

There are tinkers, tailors, and shoemakers, lie snoring in their sleep
While we poor souls on the ocean wide are a-plowing through the deep
There's nothing to defend us, love, nor to keep us from the cold
On the ocean wide, where we must bide like jolly seamen bold.

But when the wars are over, there'll be peace on every shore
We will drink to our wives and our children, and the girls that we adore
We'll call for liquor merrily, and spend out money free
And when the money it is all gone, we'll boldly go to sea.

So adieu, sweet lovely Nancy, ten thousand times adieu
I'm a-going round the ocean, love, to seek for something new
Come change your ring with me, dear girl, come change your ring with me,
For it might be a token of true love while I am on the sea.

Raglan Road

Lyrics:
On Raglan Road of an autumn day
I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare
That I might one day rue
I saw the danger and I passed
Along the enchanted way
And said let grief be a fallen leaf
At the dawning of the day

On Grafton Street in November
We tripped lightly along the ledge
Of a deep ravine where can be seen
The worth of passion's pledge
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts
And I not making hay
Oh I loved too much and by such by such
Is happiness thrown away

I gave her gifts of the mind
I gave her the secret signs
Known to the artists who have known
The true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint I did not stint
I gave her poems to say
With her own name there
And her own dark hair
Like clouds over fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet
I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should
A creature made of clay
When the angel woos the clay
He'll lose his wings at the dawn of day

Arthur McBride

Paul Brady 1977

Traditional. This one goes back to 1840s and was recorded by Planxty , Paul Brady and Bob Dylan. The first verion is by Andy Irvine with Plankty. all the other versions of the song are included here. The sheet music is below. Thanks to Marc Fahrbach for the chords for the Planxty version.

Long Version in G

I (G)had a first cousin called Arthur McBride
He and (C)I took a (G)stroll down (Am)by the sea(C)side;
(G)Seeking good fortune and (C)what might be(G)tide
It was just as the (Am)day was a'(C)daw(D)nin'
And (G)after restin' we (C)both took a (G)tramp
We (C)met Sergeant (G)Harper and (Am)Corporal (C)Cramp
Be(G)sides the wee drummer who beat up the camp
With his row-dee-(D)dow-dow in the (G)morning

He says my young fellows if you will enlist
A guinea you quickly will have in your fist
Besides a crown for to kick up the dust
And drink the King's health in the morning
For a soldier he leads a very fine life
He always is blessed with a charming young wife
And he pays all his debts without sorrow or strife
And always lives happy and charming

And a soldier he always is decent and clean
In the finest of garments he's constantly seen
While other poor fellows go dirty and mean
And sup on thin gruel in the morning
Says Arthur, I wouldn't be proud of your clothes
You've only the lend of them as I suppose
And you dare not change them one night or you know
If you do you'll be flogged in the morning

And although we are single and free
We take great delight in our own company
And we have no desire strange countries to see
Although your offer is charming
And we have no desire to take your advance
All hazards and danger we barter on chance
and you'd have no scruples to send us to France
Where we would be shot without warning

And now says the sergeant, if I hear but one word
I'll instantly now will out with my sword
And into your bodies as strength will afford
So now my gay devils take warning
But Arthur and I we took the odds
We gave them no chance to launch out their swords
Whacking shillelaghs came over their heads
And paid them right smart in the morning

As for the wee drummer, we rifled his pow
And made a football of his row-do-dow-dow
Into the ocean to rock and to roll
And bade it a tedious returnin'
As for the old rapier that hung by his side
We flung it as far as we could in the tide
To the Devil I pitch you, says Arthur McBride
To temper your steel in the morning

Lied van de Zee

Hier, los van het land
Los van gewicht
Laat ik me leiden

Hier, los van het woord
Dicht bij het geweld
Van alle tijden

Zo wild is je klank, zo rijk is je lied
Soms dring je tot me door
Soms hoor ik het niet

Hier, loodgrijs en grauw
Sta ik bij jou om te bekomen
Schuim, grijsgelig schuim

Wandel, vergeet, duizend gedachten

The Jolly Tinker

 The Jolly Tinker
As I went down a shady lane, at a door I chanced to knock
"Have you any pots or kettles, with rusty holes to block?"
"Well indeed I have, don't you know I have
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed I have"

The misses came out to the door and she asked me to come in
"You're welcome jolly tinker and I hope you brought your tin"
"Well indeed I did, don't you know I did
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed I did"

She took me through the kitchen and she led me through the hall
And the servants cried "The devil, has he come to block us all
"Well indeed I have, don't you know I have
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed I have"

She took me up the stairs, me lads, to show me what to do
Then she fell on the feathery bed and I fell on it too
"Well indeed I did, don't you know I did
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed I did"

She then took out a frying pan and she began to knock
For to let the servants know, me lads, that I was at my work
"Well indeed I was, don't you know I was
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed I was"

She put her hand into her pocket and she pulled out twenty pounds
"Take that my jolly tinker and we'll have another round"
"Well, indeed we will, don't you know we will
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed we will"

Well, I've been a jolly tinker for these forty years or more
But such a lovely job as that, I never did before
Well, indeed I didn't, don't you know I didn't...
To me right fol-ooral-addy, well indeed I didn't"

The Foggy Dew

Sinead O'Connor & The Chieftans.

The Foggy Dew

Luke Kelly Singing The Foggy Dew {1966}for German television called "Irland - Lieder für Träumer, Musik für Rebellen" which translates to "Ireland - Songs for dreamers, music for rebels".
The Foggy Dew was written by Canon Charles O`Neill in 1919.

As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I
There Armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by
No fife did hum nor battle drum did sound it's dread tatoo
But the Angelus bell o'er the Liffey swell rang out in the foggy dew

Right proudly high over Dublin Town they hung out the flag of war
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Sulva or Sud El Bar
And from the plains of Royal Meath strong men came hurrying through
While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew

But the bravest fell, and the requiem bell rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide in the springing of the year
And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew
