Greenland Whale Fisheries

Over de walvisvangst, die in dit nummer niet goed uitpakt. Een shanty.

When the whale get strike and the line runs out And the whale makes a flunder with its tail And the boat capsized and I lost my darlin' man No more, no more Greenland for you, brave boys No more, no more Greenland for you Twas in eighteen hundred and fifty three, on June the thirteenth day That our gallant ship her anchor weighed And for Greenland sailed away, brave boys, And for Greenland sailed away. The lookout on the crosstree stood With a spyglass in his hand There's a whale, there's a whale, there's a whalefish, he cried And she blows at every span, brave boys She blows at every span! Well we struck that whale and the line played out But she gave a flunder with her tail And the boat capsized and four men were drowned And we never caught that whale, brave boys, We never caught that whale. Oh, to lose that whale, my captain cried, It grieves my heart full sore But to lose four of my gallant men It grieves me ten times more, brave boys, It grieves me ten times more! Oh, Greenland is a dreadful place It's a land that's never green Where there's ice and snow and the whalefishes blow And daylight's seldom seen, brave boys And daylight's seldom seen When the whale gets strike, and the line runs out And the whale makes a flunder with its tail And the boat capsized and I lost my darlin' man No more, no more Greenland for you, brave boys. No more, no more Greenland for you.

The Dubliners - Greenland Whale Fishery

The Greenland Whale Fisher. Samen met The Wellerman hoort dit nummer natuurlijk in het repertoire.

Oh In eighteen-hundred and-forty-four
Of March the eighteenth day
We hoisted our colours to the top of the mast
And for Greenland bore away, brave boys
And for Greenland bore away

The lookout on the mainmast he stood
His spyglass in his hand
"There's a whale, there's a whale, there's a whalefish" he cried
"And she blows at every span, brave boys
And she blows at every span"

The captain stood on the quarter deck
The ice was in his eye
"Overhaul, overhaul, let your jib sheets fall
And go put your boats to sea, brave boys
And go put your boats to sea"

The boats were lowered and the men aboard
The whale was full at view
Resolved, resolved was each whalerman bold
For to steer where the whalefish blew, brave boys
For to steer where the whalefish blew

The harpoon struck and the line paid out
With a single flourish of his tail
He capsized our boat and we lost five men
And we did not catch that whale, brave boys
And we did not catch that whale

The losin' of those five jolly men
It grieved out captain sore
But the losin' of that sperm whale fish
Now it grieved him ten times more, brave boys
Now it grieved him ten times more

"Up anchor now" our captain he cried
"For the winter stars do appear
And it's time that we left this cold country
And for the England we will steer, brave boys
And for the England we will steer"

Well, Greenland is a barren land
A land that bears no green
Where there's ice and snow and the whalefishes blow
And the daylight's seldom seen, brave boys
And the daylight's seldom seen

The Longest Johns "Wellerman" (Sea Shanty) Official Lyrics & Meaning | V...

Het verhaal van The Wellerman, verteld door The Longest Johns.

Santiano, Nathan Evans - Wellerman (Lyric Video)

Op accordeon

Even om de variaties te beluisteren, ook al is het dan op accordeon en net op trekharmonica. Evenzogoed prachtig.

The Wellerman op GC trekharmonica

Mel Biggs op de GC trekzak.

The Wellerman

Zo leuk, The Wellerman. Daar gaan we eens even op studeren.

The Wellerman

There once was a ship that put to sea

The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea

The winds blew up, her bow dipped down

Oh blow, my bully boys, blow (huh)

Soon may the Wellerman come

To bring us sugar and tea and rum

One day, when the tonguing is done

We'll take our leave and go

She had not been two weeks from shore

When down on her a right whale bore

The captain called all hands and swore

He'd take that whale in tow (huh)

Soon may the Wellerman come

To bring us sugar and tea and rum

One day, when the tonguing is done

We'll take our leave and go

Before the boat had hit the water

The whale's tail came up and caught her

All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her

When she dived down low (huh)

Soon may the Wellerman come

To bring us sugar and tea and rum

One day, when the tonguing is done

We'll take our leave and go

No line was cut, no whale was freed

The captain's mind was not of greed

But he belonged to the Whaleman's creed

She took that ship in tow (huh)

Soon may the Wellerman come

To bring us sugar and tea and rum

One day, when the tonguing is done

We'll take our leave and go

For forty days or even more

The line went slack then tight once more

All boats were lost, there were only four

But still that whale did go (huh)

Soon may the Wellerman come

To bring us sugar and tea and rum

One day, when the tonguing is done

We'll take our leave and go

As far as I've heard, the fight's still on

The line's not cut, and the whale's not gone

The Wellerman makes his regular call

To encourage the captain, crew and all (huh)

Soon may the Wellerman come

To bring us sugar and tea and rum

One day, when the tonguing is done

We'll take our leave and go

Take our leave and go
